From 2020 Mercedes S-Cl ass spy photos
I blame Tesla for this

I’ve got no real issue with touch screens in cars as long as they look good and as seamless as possible.
Obviously because this is a spy shot and the interior is camoflauged I can’t really see how good or bad it will look when done, but it doesn’t look promising.

I’m willing to bet this is a very crude prototype at best. Considering how much MB has been hyping up their new MBUX infotainment system which seems to be pretty well integrated into the dash, I bet they’ll continue on that trend, especially in the S Class.

My big issue is that you can’t use a touchscreen by feel. You have to take your eyes off the road and look at it in order to do anything.

Give me Home,
Volume, T
emperature, fan speed, Heated/Vented seats controls
as
physical knobs (No I won’t set it in Auto I need to change stuff and I need the heated seats to be on RIGHT NOW
so STFU) Ok,
if volume is on the steering wheel I will live with it. D
on’t give a damn about the rest. Or just give me an IDrive type controller and touchscreen and let me choose how to use it.
I don’t mind touch screens per se as long as they’re fast and easy to use.

Yes and no, with most cars that have screens you have wheel controls for radio and the other things you normally use every day, and in the case of my car there are actual buttons for the climate control as well as the touch screen, some systems aren’t like this, but you do eventually learn where some of the things are and can almost navigate some basic stuff without looking.
I’m also pretty sure I can do almost anything with voice control on my car as well.
For me like I said as long as the screen looks like it belongs and not like a giant tablet slapped on the dash, I like it.

NOOOO!

Kinda my deal too, My car has a blend of touch screen and physical knobs and buttons together, which is cool. I would take a car that is entirely touch screen controls if it was a seamless look, I just don’t like the look of a giant tablet slapped haphazardly onto a dash and them going “Look 56 inch screen, biggest one ever”

ugh.....why.
That would bother me so much to have, I like the way dodge does it in the Charger/Challenger/Dart/Anything else I’ve ever driven made by them.
Current gen anyways.
They all look in place, smooth, they work pretty well in my experience, and have physical buttons as supplement.

uConnect is excellent and one of my favorite infotainment systems, although I do not like 2 step-process to access heated/ventilated seats and heated steering wheel. I have heard reports of it crashing completely over the years and that is one of my fears with having all controls inside the infotainment.
The Kia/Hyundai systems are another favorite of mine no-nonsense simple logical nothing fancy backed up by physical buttons
Like the new iDrives as well. Older ones sucked bad but they’ve built it up really well over the years.

Question: who keeps asking for these bigger and bigger touch screens? Who are these focus groups?
![]() 02/13/2019 at 21:55 |

I’ve had minimal issues with my uConnect, and some of them do have buttons on the dash+the infotainment controls. And they even recognized the issues and gave out 10 year additional warrantees on some cars that were affected by the repeat crashing. Which is nice.

The people who can afford a new S Class are most likely old people and this would suck for them, but then again they probably get chauffeured anyways, perhaps there is a new crop of younger millionaires and billionaires who actually want to drive S classes?
I suspect Asian, Middle East and Russian clients perhaps? But even there many get Chauffered young or old

I ‘ll wager this is a weird testing mule and the real product won’t look like this.
Kind of amazing the C217 has been on the road for over 5 years now.

... my knobs, buttons, sliders, and wi nders that actually physically do things when I move them all function reliably 26 years and 175,000 miles later.

The “why” part is to have “largest in class” touch screens. It’s a bullet point that matters little in the real world. Hell, even on consumer tablets, how many people go “UGH! WHY IS MY TABLET ONLY 8.9" WHEN MY NEIGHBOR HAS ONE THAT’S 9.4!!!!!!!!”
![]() 02/13/2019 at 22:44 |

Oh good. Further down on the dash. Who needs to look a t the road any way?

Err... you'll be able to shout your every command in the most demanding and demeaning fashion possible to this thing...and it should respond to your every whim. No need to take your eyes off the road. Unless you've engaged the autonomous mode...

I wonder how Tesla drivers are currently faring with Ontario’s extra-tough distracted driving laws, where they’ve even called out eating, drinking, and using your nav system as distractions.

I mean I know why, it’s all a dick swinging contest.
I joked about it somewhere else in here, but yeah a lot of people are going to go “This car has a 9 inch screen, this one has a 65 inch 4k display mounted to the dash though”
You CAN do larger screens and still look good, I think dodge did a good job in the police models of going about it, they look normal, they don’t look like someone did it as an afterthought. The Ford, the Mercedes, and a few others I’ve seen look like an afterthought panic with someone wondering how and where they will fit it.

Loved the uconnect in my old Charger. Until it crapped out. And was replaced 3 times. I got sick of the electrical gremlins and traded it in.
When it was working it was the best.

we’ll know by the end of this year if these pics showed a test mule or close to production.

Hmm interesting. Perhaps the Tesla forums has info on owner experience with this. But yeah point is it’s distracting.

That’s the general sentiment I’ve seen. When it crashes it crashes hard.

Idk, I don’t have new S Class money but if I could have any car from the lineup it’d be a Maybach S650 to drive myself around in. I hope they depreciate to the point where I can get one CPO after the W223 releases.

I’d have to see it to believe it. MB can do a goofy thing here and there, but this would be beyond the pale.
